Long term records are available on the San Miguel and

Dolores Rivers. Bureau studies utilized these records to extrapolate the gage

record for the virgin flow of Beaver Creek to 5 years. The Bureau study was

done when only 3 and 4-year records were available. The same correlation could

not be extended to 10 years for this study due to a lack of complete diversion

records. A similar correlation (correlation coefficient of 0.91). was found

between the gage records of West Naturita Creek and the Dolores River at

Dolores (corrected for the operation of Groundhog Reservoir). Monthly water

yields in the Beaver Creek Basin and above the Cone Collection Ditch were

estimated as a function of the extended record for West Naturita Creek.

The Bureau of Reclamation developed a curve relating areal annual yield to

elevation for the San Miguel Project area. As would be expected. the yields

were greater at high elevations. A weighted mean elevation was found for the

drainage area above each diversion point and the Cone and Gurley Reservoirs.

AIl average annual yield was developed for each area. This figure was then

compared with the figure from the West Naturita Creek drainage to provide a

ratio. The ratio was used to determine monthly yields based on West Naturita

Creek streamflow.

-13-
