Class I lands are <br /> <br /> <br />highly suitable for irrigation farming, capable of producing sustained and <br /> <br /> <br />relatively high yields of a wide range of climatically adapted crops. They are <br /> <br /> <br />smooth layers with gentle slopes. The soils are deep with medium to fairly <br /> <br /> <br />fine texture with good drainage and good moisture holding capacity. These <br /> <br /> <br />soils are free from harmful accumulation of soluble salts. Soil and <br /> <br /> <br />topographic conditions are such that no drainage problems are anticipated and <br /> <br /> <br />minimum erosion will result from irrigation. Class II lands are considered <br /> <br /> <br />slightly less productive than Class I lands due to one or several deficiencies <br /> <br /> <br />such as lower available moi sture capacity (due to coarse texture or shallow <br /> <br /> <br />soil), moderate salinity, or topographic limitation such as uneven surface <br /> <br /> <br />topography. Class III lands are less suitable for irrigation than Class II <br /> <br /> <br />lands because of more extreme deficiencies in the soil, topographic, or <br /> <br /> <br />drainage characteristics than that described for Class II lands. <br /> <br />In addition to the Bureau of Reclamation classification the SCS has <br />classified the soils on Wright's Mesa. The majority of the soils on the Mesa <br />consist of the following: <br /> <br />1. 70B - Barx fine sandy loam, 1-3% <br />2. 70C - Barx fine sandy loam, 3-6% <br />3. 21B - Callan loam, 1-3% <br />4. 21C - Callan loam, 3-6% <br /> <br />The SCS describes the Barx soil as deep and well drained with moderate <br /> <br /> <br />permeability and high available water capacity. Runoff is slow to medium and <br /> <br /> <br />the hazard of water erosion is slight to high depending on the slope. This <br /> <br /> <br />soil is well suited to irrigated crops. The SCS describes the Callan soil as <br /> <br /> <br />deep and well drained with slow permeability and high available water capacity. <br /> <br /> <br />Runoff is medium to rapid and the hazard of water erosion is slight to high. <br /> <br /> <br />This soil is well suited for irrigated crops, with the main limitation being <br /> <br /> <br />slow permeability. The SCS classification supports the Bureau of Reclamation <br /> <br /> <br />classification. <br /> <br />-8- <br />
