For purposes of compari son bet-
ween counties, crop distribution is shown as a percentage of all crops
harvested within each county. The total harvested acreage for these
three counties averaged approximately 301,700 acres (4, 5, 6). In
comparing the counties, the average distribution of crops remains
fairly consistent, except for the balance between hay and potatoes.

Crop distribution among the three counties was used as a basis for
estimati ng the di stribution of each type of crop served by the 110nte
Vista and Rio Grande Canals, since crop statistics for Santa Maria
Reservoir Company water users were not available. The irrigated lands
involved in this study is managed by 240 landowners also served by the
canals.

b. Municipal and Industrial Use

Presently, the Rio Grande and Monte Vista Canals serve areas with
rural population density. Water use is primarily dispersed among
farms throughout the three counti es, and industry is basically con-
fined to farm and farm produce processing activities. Domestic use
and municipal water demands are generally suppl ied by pumping from
groundwater aquifers.

I II - 5
