GENERAL INFORMATION <br /> <br />A. Location and Regional Setting <br /> <br />The Conti nental Dam and Reservoi r is a compacted zoned earthfill <br />dam located in the San Juan t10untains in Hinsdale County, Colorado. <br />More particularly, the dam and reservoir are located within Sections <br />20, 21, 28, 29, 30, and 31, T42N, R3W, and the reservoir intermit- <br />tently in Sections 25 and 36, T42N, R4W of the New Mexico P.M. as <br />shown on Figure I-I. This location, approximately 12 miles south- <br />southwest of the town of Lake City, Colorado, is at an elevation of <br />about 10,300 feet. <br /> <br />The dam creates an on-stream reservoir filled by flows of North <br />Clear Creek, a tributary of the Rio Grande River. The total drainage <br />a rea above the dam is 50.9 squa re mil es. The reservoi r is usually <br />allowed to store all runoff occurring between November 1 and April 1. <br />During the remainder of the year, water is stored in priority. <br />The use of water stored in the reservoir is to provide irrigation <br />water, including groundwater recharge, to agricultural users in the <br />San Luis Valley. <br /> <br />B.
