I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I,
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

HANDY DITCH COMPANY. . .

Berthoud, Colorado

History
The Handy Ditch Company
Paqe 2

In 1983, the Company entered into another agreement with
the Agricultural Soil Conservation to enlarge the Hertha
Reservoir. This created an additional 1,000 acre feet of water
storage which is captured each year from seepage water from
Carter Lake. The contribution by The Handy Ditch was financed
by the Colorado Conservation Board in the amount of $325,000.00.

In 1976, the Big Thompson River experienced a massive flood
that destroyed the Handy diversion works. The entire cost of
replacing this structure was paid for by the Federal Government
through its disaster program. The extent of this improvement
cost $211,000.00.

The growth of the Town of Berthoud has placed pressure on
its water facilities. After a long period of extended negotiations,
an agreement was arrived at whereby the Town could look to the
Handy Ditch for additional storage, and The Handy could be
assured of the continued use of the Ditch by the Town. This
agreement will be the basis of a working partnership for years
to come.

In 1987, The Handy Ditch purchased a farm which had a
separate water right that the Handy delivered. The farm was
for sale, and the Company was concerned that the farm would
be sold to a speculator who would transfer the right out of the
system. When the farmland was sold, the water right was
retained. The net cost of the right was $155,000.00 which
insured the retention of about 700 acre feet within the system
at a cost of about $220.00 per acre foot.

In 1990, the outlet tube to the Number 1 Headgate failed
which brings the Handy Ditch to the necessity of further financing.

11
