The triaxial shear tests were utilized in a shear analysis of embankment
stability. The Swedish method of slices was applied to the dam cross section.
One trial method is reported herein for record purposes and points of discussion.
The cross section was divided into nine (9) segments as shown in Sheet 2.
The following table illustrates type and magnitudes of forces resolved from
the Swedish Circle using a dry density of no pd.

Al
A2
A3
A4
AS
A6
A7
As
A9

STATION 6 + 25

ft2
Area

i

Wx

SWEDISH CIRCLE

Sx

3114

4590

4299

3472

2560

1191

-244

-171

-272
18539

Nr

Nr Tan 0

35

54

3450

2262

1103

55.3

49

6083

3990

1946

69.9

34

7689

6374

3108

74.7

25

8217

7447

3632

71. 5

19

7865 .

7436

3626

62.4

10

6864

6759

3296

51.0

o
2 30'

5610

5610

2736

35.8

2030'

3938

3937

1940

13

11

1430

1429
45244

696
22063

The summation of the (Sx) shearing components is l8, 539 on this trial
surface. The resistance to this shear or sliding component is furnished by
the cohesion and the friction in the soil. TIle cohesion is equal to the unit co-
hesion times the total length of the curved surface, or cL. The friction
resisting movement is:
n

Sx = cL + ~ Nr Tan 0
1

in which () is the friction angle of the soil mass. The triaxial shear tests
gave values of ()l froJU 40. to 320 with an average of ISO. On the spillway end
the low value was 26. The unit cohesion was reported as 0 and O. 70 ksf. The
zero value is probably not realistic. A minimum c = 10 psf (0.01 ksf) was
used herein for analyses.

III-4
