HYDROLOGY

Contributing drainage area (above Trinidad
gaging station) ..........................,.......

Runoff and time of occurrence:
Average annual twater years 1925-1957)
Maximum annual water year 1942) . .........
Minimum annual water year 1951) . .........

REMARKS

795 sq.mi.

62,100 ac.-ft.
197,300 ac.-ft,
16,300 ac.-ft.

In the development of the plans for constructing the Trinidad Project,
the activities of the Bureau of Reclamation were confined to investi-
gating the irrigation functions which consist of improving the water
supply for 11 existing irrigation ditches. The irrigation investi-
gations included studies of the irrigation water supply and utilization,
classification of the project lands, and economic studies for estimating
the payment capacity of the lands and the irrigation benefits. Other
studies were confined to a survey of the existing irri@ation facilities
which revealed that their general condition is good and that they will
be adequate for serving the project lands after minor improvements
are made as provided for in the OM&R estimates used in the economic
analysis.

In past operations, the irrigation water supplies for the area as
a whole have been inadequate and ill-distributed--the average annual
quantity amounting to 61.0 percent of the total requirement with
late season supplies being consistently unavailable, Construction
of the project and restricting deliveries to irrigable lands only
will increase the annual average supply to 83.0 percent of the total
requirement.

The Purgatoire River Conservancy District bas been organized for
the purpose of contracting for repayment and for management of the
project water supply.

vi

:::,..
