Agricultural Economy'

crops grown and their distribution as determined by the' data are
shown in table 11. ~e crop yields used in both the "without" and
"w:ith" project are shown in table 12.

~e estimates of crop yields for use in the "with-project"
analysis were made on the basis that a full water supply would be
available, Estimates were first made of the yields whic~/would be
attainable on lands having a productivity index of 100. 11 For
lands of lower quality, the yields were adjusted downward on the
basis of their productivity indices.

Livestock Production

In selecting the livestock enterprises for the representative
farms, recognition was given to recent practices within the project
area, For all the econoIllic tracts, a livestock enterprise consisting
of a beef cowherd for the production of feeder calves was included in
the farm program. ~e size of the cowherd was adjusted to fit the
available feed supply. In the budget analyses for the Model Tract, a
small flock of sheep and a token hog raising enterprise were also
included. Except f9r the size of the operations, similar livestock
enterprises were used in both the "without" and the "with" farm budgets.

IRRIGATION OPERATION. MAINTENANCE, AND REPIACEMENT

"

Meetings with the board of directors for the various ditch systems
established operation maintenance costs at $4 per acre for future "with"
budgets, In arriving at the annual cost per acre, consideration was
given to the adequacy of the various distribution systems and the need
for construction of permanent diversion facilities ,to handle the
irrigation water with Trinidad Reservoir in operation.

Ditch boards stressed that under "with" conditions permanent
structures would be built by the ditch companies involved,. The increased
cost of,OM&R for Model and Baca Joint ditches reflect the annUal cost of
constructing permanent type structures to replace temporary facilities
now being used, Until the flood protection afforded by Trinidad Reservoir
is a reality, modernization of the irrigation systems cannot be accom-
plished. Some ditches have started to accumulate reserve funds for
system improvements when Trinidad Reservoir is constructed.

',.>

...-:.'"

11 The productivity indices were assigned to the lands during
the land classification survey,

40

Rev. 9/64
