I
I
I
I
I

5.0 INFLOW ANALYSES - COLORADO-BIG THOMPSON PROJECT (TASK 3)

5.1 HYDROLOGY AND OPERATION OF THE CBT PROJECT

I
I
I

The Western Slope components of the CBT project divert and store waters
from the Colorado River and its tributaries and export these waters across
the continental divide via the Alva B. Adams Tunnel. The Eastern Slope
components of the Project consist of conveyance and storage facilities that
deliver this water to Loveland and numerous other Front Range allotters.
It was assumed for the purposes of this study that adequate capacities in
the Eastern Slope components would exist to deliver any CBT water required.
The CBT project is a major source of water for the City of Loveland. In
1985, for example, the City diverted 3,150 ac-ft. of CBT water; the total
treated water production was 7,575 ac-ft.

I
I
I
I

As shown in Figure 5-1, the Western Slope component of the CBT is comprised
of three storage facilities: Lake Granby, Shadow Mountain Lake, and Willow
Creek Reservoir. Lake Granby is the major storage component of the system
and is located on the Colorado River. Lake Granby receives the direct
runoff from the headwaters of the Colorado River as well as diversions from
the Willow Creek Reservoir. From Lake Granby, water is pumped to Shadow
Mountain Lake (which also stores runoff from the North Fork of the Colorado
River) via the Granby Pump Canal. Shadow Mountain Lake is connected to
Grand Lake to make a single body of water from which deliveries are made
through the Adams Tunnel to the Front Range. An additional storage
facility of the project is Green Mountain Reservoir (not shown in Figure
5-1). This reservoir is located on the Blue River and was constructed to
ensure that irrigation and power generation under prior rights on the
Colorado River are not affected by CBT diversions. Releases are made from
Green Mountain to meet the needs of these rights and to allow diversion of
water by CBT throughout the year (VPRS 1981).

I
I
I
I
I
I
I

5-1
