<br />Problems <br /> <br />4. Following the 1965 storm, the Agricultural Stabil ization and <br />Conservation Service office received applications for pay- <br />ments for emergency (F-4) assi'stance in the amount of $67,100 <br />for land 'level ing, debris removal , irrigation ditch repair, <br />grading, shaping, and fencing. This represented 80 percent <br />of the estimated cost. The estimated total cost amounts to <br />nearly $84,000. In addition, it is estimated that no appl ica- <br />tions were made on at least $20,000 of damage repairs. From <br />these applications and damage schedules taken, the land damages <br />from sediment and erosion are estimated at $104,000. <br /> <br />5. The crop losses from flood damage schedules are estimated <br />at $267,000 and other agricultural farm damages are esti- <br />mated at $62,000. <br /> <br />6. Total damages for the watershed area from the 1965 storm <br />are 'estimated at $500,800. Secondary and indirect damages <br />were not estimated for this flood. <br /> <br />Unde r p resen t cond i t ions damages beg i n a t the two-yea r' f requenc y. ,The, <br />estimated average annual floodwater damages for the watershed are (Table <br />5) : <br /> <br />I. Agricultural: $220,050, of which $208,550 is crop and <br />-pas,tu-re -ano--$,l,) i-~G-i-s othef'-'~r i-cu'l-tur-a-t-damage; -and- <br /> <br />2. Nonagricul tural: $11,760, of which $6,590 is to Julesburg <br />Irrigation Oistrict; $3,070 to roads, bridges and rai 1- <br />road; and $2,100 to the town of Ovid. <br /> <br />The larger floods have caused a number of people to moVe out of their <br />homes temporarily, particularlY in the town of Ovid.' <br /> <br />Eros i on Damage <br /> <br />Erosion rates for the watershed are generally low. There are no areas <br />of critical sediment source. Minor erosion in several natural channels <br />above the Highl ine Canal occur on nonirrigated 'cropland. Mi'nor erosion <br />occurs in Nebraska originating where natural channels enter on nonirrigated <br />cropland and flow onto the steeper irrigated cropland above lodgepole <br />Creek. <br /> <br />The source of sediment above the floodwater retarding structures is <br />mainly l'rom sheet and rill erosion with about 10 percent being produced <br />by gully and streambank erosion. Gross erosion rates from sheet and <br />rill erosion in the watershed average about 0.8 tons per acre on the <br />rangeland and vary from 2.2 to 3.5 tons per acre on dry cropland. <br /> <br />22 <br />
