As shown on Figure 1,
Box Springs obtains water from Horse Creek approximately 18 miles north of Ordway,
Colorado.

The February 10, 1904 Box Springs shareholders list consisted of 27 members
representing 587 shares. Additionally, there were 13 shares in the treasury resulting in a
total of 600 company shares. Each share was to provide enough water to irrigate 10 acres
of land and, as a result, a total of 6,000 acres were to be irrigated under the Box Springs
system. The purchase price for one share was $50.

Mr. D. V. Burrell of the D. V. Burrell Seed Company located in Rocky Ford,
Colorado, owned and irrigated land under the Box Springs system with 30 shares of
original company stock. Around 1914, Mr. Burrell began developing groundwater pumping
plants for irrigation and also began acquiring more Box Springs shares to use in conjunction'
with the pumping plants. Crops grown by Mr. Burrell were many and varied, and were sold
by the D. V. Burrell Seed Company primarily as seed.

During the drought of the 1930's, Mr. Burrell's family acquired approximately 75
percent of the total Box Springs shares. B. O. Carter, E. W. Travers, and W. W. Travers
irrigated their crops similar to Mr. Burrell such that they conjunctively used ditch water
from Box Springs shares together with groundwater pumping plants. By 1938, Mr. Burrell
had sold his 460.5 shares to B. O. Carter and Kenneth Carter, resulting in a total of 12
shareholders owning the 600 shares of company stock for irrigation of approximately 600
acres. Principal crops grown under the system during this period were sugar beets, corn,
milo, and alfalfa.

Presently, Box Springs has seven stockholders for irrigation on the Carter and
Markus properties, The Carter and Markus families rent additional Box Springs shares from

1
