PROJECT SUMMARY

This project proposes to rebuild the Beaman-Meadow Island No.2 main
Diversion Dam located on the South Platte River. The dam site is approximately
3 miles Southwest of Platteville, Colorado in Weld County. This Dam provides
irrigation water to 3,547 acres of farm land and has annual average water
diversion of approximately 11,000 acre-feet.
The existing dam was built of wood in the 1880's and is in such poor
condition that it will probably last no more than 2-3 years. There is no way
to deliver irrigation water to the District's lands without this dam. It is
proposed to replace this structure with a concrete overflow dam using stop
logs to provide the necessary head to feed the canal headgates. Total depth
of water upstream of the dam would increase no more than 3 feet with the
flash boards in. a cutoff wall of steel sheetpiling under the concrete floor
will act as the foundation and eliminate any possibility of piping under
the structure. The project costs are estimated to be $216,770.00 if construc-
tion begi ns in 1 982. Other alternati ves cons idered were an Ogee Cres t concrete
dam and a Radial Gated concrete structure. These were not chosen because
operating and maintenance expense would be double and the project costs
would also be increased by 50 to 100%.

-1-
