I

I

I

of which Crystal, Creek is a tributary, are not adversely af-

fected, the runoff from Black Mesa, in full or a part thereof,

could be collected and diverted into the Crystal Creek above the

points of diversion to the Fruitland Mesa. This source of water

could thus provide a substantial amount of irrigation supplies

directly or through Gould Reservoir to the service areas of the

Fruitland Mesa Water Conservancy District.

I

I

The estimated amount of runoff from Black Mesa is as follows:

I

I

I

Name of Subdrainage Drainage Area Runoff
(mi2) (ac ft.)
Cotton Creek 5.86 1,531
Buckhorn Gulch 1.69 412
Long Gulch 4.51 2,113
Mesa Creek 9.15 5,814

I

I

I

Section 4: Existing Status of Development

I

The major source of water for the existing 6,310 acres of the

irrigation service area in the Fruitland Mesa Water Conservancy

District is the Crystal Creek and its main tributary, the Dyer's Fork

Creek Ditch. Run-of-stream diversion works on these streams exist in

the form of permanent, semi-permanent, or crude structures. Flow-

measuring devices exist only at some of the diversion points, while at

other points, the discharges are merely guessed.

I

I

I

Gould Reservoir, behind the dam built at the headwaters of Iron
Creek, provides the only storage facility in the system. This dam,'
built in the year 1914 and raised to its present height partly in 1937
and then completed in 1954, is owned and operated by the Fruitland
Irrigation Company. The reservoir operated exclusively for irrigation
water releases has a storage capacity of 8,300 acre feet. The pool
also provides incidental benefits for fishery. The existing live
storage of the reservoir is about 8,000 acre feet.

I

I

I

I

I-4
