The
city has an average of 325 sunny days per year.

-

Spring is the wettest, cloudiest, and windiest season. Much of the
precipitation that occurs in spring falls as snow during the colder periods of
the season. In the summer, precipitation usually results from scattered local
thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. Mornings are usually clear
and sunny. Autumn is generally the sunniest season. Periods of unpleasant
weather are generally brief. Winter has the least precipitation accumulation;
however, precipitation frequency is high~r than in autumn. There is also more
cl oudi ness and hi gl1er rel ati ve humi di ty than in autumn. Wi nter weather can be
quite severe, but as a general rule the severity does not last long.

I

Cl imatologicaldata were obtained for Greeley and Estes Park, Colorado. The
Estes Park station was chosen for its proximity to the reservoir. Stations
closer to the site were not displayed because they had incomplete or very
short periods of record. Tables 1.1 and 1.2 show the normal monthly
temperature and precipitation at each station. The term "normal" as applied
to temperature and preci pi tati on refers to the 30-year average for the peri od
from 1951 through 1980. The monthly averages represent the averages of the
mean daily temp~rature and precipitation data.

The Greeley station is located at elevation 4810 feet. Extreme temperatures
range from _450F to 1070F. The hottest month is usually July ana the coldest,
January, with normal monthly temperatur~s of 73.60F and 25.0oF, respectively.
Normal monthly preci pitati on varies consi derably from 0.28 inches in February
to 2.50 inches in May. The growing season averages 138 days.

For the Estes Park station, daily t~mperature extremes have historically
vari ed between _390F and 980F. Normal monthly temperatures range from 27. 30F
in January to 62.20F in July. The normal annual temperature is 43.20F.
Normal monthly precipitation ranges from 0.39 inches in February to 2.13
inches in May. All the winter precipitation falls as snow. The elevation of
the Estes Park station is 7525 feet.

1231 H

-5-
