It impounds a reservoir,
when full, of 2,349 acre-feet at the normal \~ater surface elevation of 9087.
Releases from the reservoir are controlled by an outlet works that discharges
into Joe Wright Creek downstream of the dam.

A 25-foot wide concrete-lined service spillway is located in a saddle
southwest of the main dam, with a control elevation of 9087. The service
spi 11 way is f1 anked 100 feet to the 1 eft and 150 feet to the ri ght by an
auxiliary spillway consisting of a riprap-protected overflow dike with a crest
elevation of 9088. A 180-foot wide emergency spillway is located within the
main dam adjacent to the right abubnent at elevation 9090.

The dam is located on a small unnamed tributary to Joe Wright Creek,
approximately three miles upstream of the conf1 uence with the Cache la Poudre
Ri ver and si x mil es upstream of the Spencer Hei ghts Resort. The drai nage
basin for Barnes Meadow Reservoir 1 ies north of Rocky I~ountain National Park
in the Roosevelt National Forest. The basin divide is located at
approximately 10,470 feet on the ri dge between Trap Creek and the Cache 1 a
Poudre River. The drainage area is 3.01 square miles, and the basin has an
average slope of 528 feet per mile. The distance from the basin divide to the
reservoir is approximately 2.6 miles.

The dam was constructed in 1923 by the Mountain and Plains Irrigation Company,
and is currently owned by the City of Greeley, Colorado (City). The dam has
been repaired and modified several times over the years, most significantly in
1973 when the crest was raised approximately 13 feet, and a service and
auxiliary spillway were added, and in 1985 and 1986 when the outlet works was
repaired.

Although the reservoir has been cleared to store water at its decreed level of
9087 by the Colorado State Engi neer I s Offi ce (SED), the dam's operati ng 1 eve1
has been restricted to elevation 9083 by the City.
