A ratio for maximum hour demand to average <br />day demand of 5.0 was used in accordance with the recommendations of the Water <br />Service Plan to calculate the projected maximum hour demands shown in Table 2-6. <br />For Thermo's maximum hour demand, a maximum hour demand for the power <br />generating of 4.75 mgd was used based on the stipulations of the agreement between <br />Thermo and the City. <br />C. Fire-flows. Not only must the City's water distribution system supply potable <br />water for domestic, commercial, and industrial uses, it must also be capable of <br />supplying adequate and dependable quantities of water for fire-fighting purposes, <br />The Insurance Services Office (ISO) is the organization responsible for rating <br />municipalities on fire-fighting capabilities. In its Fire Suppression Rating Schedule, the <br />ISO provides guidelines for determining fire-flow needs, As defined by ISO, needed <br />fire-flow is defined as "the rate of flow needed for fire-fighting purposes to confine <br />a major fire to the building or within a block or group of complexes", Factors <br />considered in determining the required fire-flow include the size of the buildings, the <br />type of construction, occupancy, and exposure of buildings within and surrounding the <br />block or group complex under consideration. Hence, determination of fire-flow is <br />very site-specific and varies from building to building. <br />The ISO guidelines for one- and two-family dwelling units not exceeding two <br />stories in height, generally require a fire-flow of 1,000 gpm, assuming a separation <br />distance of 11 to 30 feet. Other habitational dwellings have a fire-flow of up to a <br />maximum of 3,500 gpm, depending on building size and construction type, The <br />Water Service Plan recommends a fire-flow of 3,500 gpm be used for multifamily <br />areas, unless specific design information is available to indicate otherwise by ISO <br />rating schedule procedures. Required fire-flows greater than 3,500 gpm are not <br />considered in determining the fire insurance classification using the ISO rating <br />schedule. <br /> <br />25325,100; lZ/07fJ4 <br /> <br />2-17 <br />
