Fi II Pressures

The lateral earth pressure against structures with horizontal backfill

shall be computed using the following equivalent fluid pressures:

1. Structures Free to Move
Moist Impervious Fill 46 pcf
Submerged Impervious Fill 25 pef
Moist Pervious Fill 42 pef
Submerged Pervious Fill 23 pef
2. Structures Restrained from Moving
Moist Impervious Fill 80 pef
Submerged Impervious Fill 40 pef
Moist Pervious Fill 63 pef
Submerged Pervious Fill 34 pef
C. Uplift
Uplift pressure is assumed effective over 100 percent of the base area

for any horizontal section in concrete or between concrete and rock. For undrained

sections, the uplift shall be assumed to vary linearly between the full hydrostatic heads

existing at the upstream and downstream edges of the structure. For drained sections,

the drains shall be considered to be 25 percent effective.

D. Wind
Wind load can act in any direction and shall be assumed to be equal

2
to 50 Ib/ft .

E. Earthquake
Horizontal earthquake forces shall be computed assuming the accelera-

tion to be equal to 0.10 g. Earthquake forces shall be computed considering only the

dead load of the structure and the maior permanent equipment.

-5-
