I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

PROJECT SUMMARY

GENERAL
The Town of Fruita, located eleven miles west of Grand Junction on the Colorado
River, is a business center for the agricultural area in the lower Grand Valley.
The Town is growing and developing as a result of several factors. These factors
include: energy related development in Mesa County, mild climate of the area,
rural atmosphere, small indqstry in the area, and proximity to Grand Junction.
Fruita and the surrounding area is expected to grow and develop at a rapid pace
mainly as a result of expected energy development. Therefore, the need for an
adequate water supply and distribution system is a high priority item for the
Town of Fruita.

The purpose of this report is to:
1. Evaluate the potential use of Colorado River water and groundwater in the
Fruita area as a muncipal water supply source. Recent policy decisions
by the Federal Government have adversely affected present and future water
transmission through the Colorado National Monument. This has made it
necessary for Fruita to seek an alternative water source.

2. Evaluate the need for additional water treatment and storage facilities
for Fruita. Currently supplemental water is provided by the Ute Water
Conservancy District. The policy of the Town is to provide an independent
water system for Fruita within its present City boundaries.

3. Evaluate the capabilities of the existing water transmission and distribution
system and make recommendations for improvements.

. 4. Inventory the Town's water rights and describe the historical use of the
water rights.

5. Evaluate the physical and legal supply available to the conditional decree
from the Colorado River.

-1-
