.

.

e

At this time, 1he Dislrict has c!eclarlld 1he canal area inoperable. The reseJVOir is at
15% of capacity. WIIh the canal in it's ~ condition, there is no way to get water to
the reservoir 'T".1m1g this an emergency sfuwion. The sole purpose of this reseIVOir is for
irrigation water. There will be no irrigation water for the va&y's 7800 irri8able acres next
season without this canal to fill the reseIVOir. Area irrigators an: already hurting from the
extremely dry condiIi.ons 1his season. l'he Town of Mancos, Mancos Rural Water
Compat\y and Mesa Verde National Pad are an receiving M&I water from the reservoir.
(Note -the Town of Mancos does haw a water right out of the river.) WIIh the reservoir
at its present elevation, the Rural Water Company and Mesa Verde may not be able to
receive their water next year.

The time ftame for the repair is a smaD. one - app1,..;...lltp.\y 6 weeb. If we an:
lucky, this would put comp1elion at the cmd of NCM:IDber. That is if we can get our
product ordered by October 19th. Tmu: is of the essence. We haw already started
engineering of the repair (October 11th) and willlllart the dirt work next 'Week. WIIh the
time frame, right-of-way's, availability of materials, and possible weather problems, we
haw chosen a pipe system to span the stilL; area. This is the II108t feasible so1uIion for the
canal problem.

e The Dis1rict is not currcnt1y in a pl)sition fin....ci..ny to make this repair. We need
~~aiotance in 1he fann of a loan or gram to fund the repair. It is ...mmlrtM at $125,000.00
due in part to the short lime ftame that we an: wodcing wiIh. The Bureau of R/"'lltft'laDon
has manned us that there is no federal mcmey avaiIab1e to help us m-."", 1his repair. We
plan to do as much of the work ourselws as possible but we will still need to rent
equipment, hire 1aborem and "'1ginP.el'S and pan:hase 1he pipe.

We ..ppR:GWe any assistance YOll can give us and your support. Money for
repayment of a loan will be conectcd 1hrough 1he districts water users fees.

If yon haw any questions, yon IIIll}' contact our superintendent, Gaty Kennedy any
time at (970) 533-7325.

Sincerely yours,

~L~~'-
Gaty Kennedy, ~dcnt for the Board of Directors of
1he Mancos Water Conservancy District

e
