I

Soil Classification system. Bulk samples were collected at each test pit
location for visual examination and laboratory testing.

I

I

A list of the test pits showing the approximate surface elevation, total

depth of the test pit and the geologic formations that were being explored is

presented on Table IU-3. The test pit program was commenced on July 1, 1982

and completed on July 2, 1982.

I

I

d. Laboratory Testing

The laboratory testing program was designed to determine the in situ

properties of the foundation materials and also the remolded properties of

the potential borrow materials. Classification tests, compaction tests,

permeability tests, pinhole dispersion tl!sts and strength tests were per-'

formed on the materials collected at the site. The description of these

tests, the method of performing the tests and the test results are presented

in detail in Appendix A.

I

I

I

I

The classification tests that were pl!rformed included moisture density,

Atterberg limits and gradation analyses. These index tests aid in classify--

ing the soils and also provide indications of the engineering characteristics

of the materials.

I

Compaction tests were performed on the bulk samples collected in the test

pits for the Hurley Terrace, Louviers Alluvium, the Sand Hills Formation and

the Fox Hills Formation. Material for compaction testing on the Pierre Shale

was a composite sample of the Shelby tube samples from borings B-1, B-2 and

B-3. Because of the depth of the Pierre Shale at the site, no bulk samples

were taken because of the limited reach of the backhoe. The maximum dr:,

density and the optimum moisture content were determined from the compactiou

tests. Design compaction requirements were determined and are usually stated

as a percentage of the maximum dry density for a particular compactivl!

effort.

I
II

I

I

I
I

I

III-14

I
I
