.~_ z:

.

.

APPROACH

The approach consists of measuring, by accepted laboratory
techniques, the water retention curves on up to 200 separate samples
taken from the Castle Pines continuous core. All distinct
lithologies exhibited by the core will be included. The water
retention curves will be measured by the pressure plate technique
(ASTM D 2325 and ASTM D 3152). The porosity and permeability to air
will be measured on each sample, as well.

The water retention curves will be used to determine the specific
yield at up to 200 points along the length of the well bore.
Response from selected geophysical well logs will be numerically
correlated with the laboratory measurements. A variety of
correlations will be attempted as suggested by both theoretical
considerations and the data. Error analyses and correlations
coefficients will be used to establish statistical confidence
intervals on all relationships that can be established.

TIME SCHEDULE

Work will begin immediately following completion of the Castle Pines
coring project and upon the execution of a Memorandum of
Understanding between Castle Pines officials and Colorado State
University. It is expected that sampling of the core and sample
preparation would begin on or about May 1, 1987.

Visual inspection of the core and available geophysical logs will be
used to select about 100 samples for first-phase testing and
analyses. It is anticipated that laboratory measurements and
correlation analyses can be completed on these first-phase samples
by July 15, 1987.

Results from the first-phase tests and analyses will be used to
guide a second sampling of the core on or about August 1, 1987.
Results of measurements on the second 100 samples should be
available by about October I.

A preliminary report on work accomplished through August 1 will be
issued by August 30, 1987. This report, while serving as a progress
document relative to the work described herein, will also constitute
a report to the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute as
required by a currently funded project ending on August 30, 1987.

A final report on all aspects of the work described in this proposal
will be completed not later than December 31, 1987.

FACILITIES

All laboratory measurements will be conducted in the Porous Media
Laboratory at the Engineering Research Center, Colorado State
University. All equipment required for this project is already
available and is routinely used for similar work. Eight pressure
cells and associated apparatus are available, providing the
capability of making water retention measurements on up to 50
samples, simultaneously.
