Much of the <br />precipitation that occurs in spring falls as snow during the colder periods of <br />the season. In the summer, precipitation usually results from scattered local <br />thunderstonns duri ng the afternoon and eveni ng. Morni ngs are usually c1 ear <br />and sunny. Autumn is generally the sunni est season. Peri ods of unp1 easant <br />weather are generally bri ef. l~i nter has the 1 east precipi tati on accumu1 ati on; <br />however, precipitation frequency is higher than in autumn. There is also more <br />cloudiness and higher relative humidity than in autumn. Winter weather can be <br />quite severe, but as a general rule the severity does not last long. <br /> <br />Climatological data were obtained for Greeley and Estes Park, Colorado. The <br />Estes Park station was chosen for its proximity to the reservoir site. <br />Stations closer to the site were not displayed because they had incomplete or <br />very short peri ods of record. Tab1 es 1.1 and 1. 2 show the normal monthly <br />temperature and precipitation at each station. The tenn "nonnal" as applied <br />to temperature and preci pi tati on refers to the 30-year average for the peri od <br />from 1951 through 1980. The monthly averages represent the averages of the <br />mean daily temperature and precipitation data. <br /> <br />The Gree1 ey stati on is located at e1 evati on 4810 feet. Extreme temperaturp.s <br />range from _450F to 1070F. The hottest month is usually July and the coldest, <br />January, wi th normal monthly temperatures of 73.60F and 25. OOF, respecti ve1y. <br />Normal monthly preci pi tati on vari es consi derab1y from 0.28 inches in February <br />to 2.50 inches in May. The gro\~ing season averages 138 days. <br /> <br />For the Estes Park station, daily temperature extremes have historically <br />vari ed between _390F and 980F. Nonna1 monthly temperatures range from 27. 3DF <br />in January to 62.20F in July. The nonna1 annual temperature is 43.2DF. <br />Nonna1 monthly precipitation ranges from 0.39 inches in February to 2.13 <br />inches in May. All the winter precipitation falls as snow. The elevation of <br />the Estes Park station is 7525 feet. <br /> <br />-4- <br />
