Chapter IV - Fonnulation of Alternatives

C. Alternative 3 - Gate Tower

Figure IV-3 shows a variation to Alternative 2. A 6-foot by 6-foot gate chamber would be
located upstream of the dam embankment instead internally to the embankment. The gate chamber
would then become a gate tower. A bridge would gain access to the gates from the dam crest to the gate
tower. The outlet pipe would consist of a 42-inch mortar lined steel sleeved pipe. The pipe would
extend downstream of the existing gate chamber and connected to the previously sleeved 42-inch pipe.
The existing gate chamber would then be filled with a pervious material and capped with concrete.

D. No-Action Alternative

A non-structural alternative to rehabilitating the outlet works is to do nothing. The operation of
the Greeley and Loveland system is dependent of the outlet works. The outlet works conveys water
from Horseshoe to Boyd Lakes for use downstream. The State Engineer's Office (SEO) could possible
restrict the reservoir or could require breaching of the dam if the outworks is not rehabilitated.

Horseshoe Dam NO.2 Outlet Works Study

20

SOYLE
