GENERAL INFORMATION AND BACKGROUND

This report will present the technical and economic feasibility

of rehabilitation work on Fuchs Dam, located within the Rio Grande

National Forest in Rio Grande County, Colorado. The dam and reservoir

are located on the East Fork of Pinos Creek, about 17 miles directly

southwest of Del Norte, Colorado, and about 5 miles directly northeast

of Summitville, Colorado, as shown on Figure I. The dam is located in

the Southeast 1/4 of Section 2 and the Northeast 1/4 of Section 11,

Township 37 North, Range 4 East, New Mexico Principle Meridian.

Fuchs Dam was initially constructed in 1930, with an original

height of 1B feet. The dam was enlarged in 1938 to its present height

of 21 feet (maximum gage height to crest of dam).

The existing

spillway consists of a timber crib crest structure and an unlined

channel back to the main stream channel. The spillway is located be-

yond the left, or west abutment of the dam. The original crest of the

spillway was at gage height 15.0.

In October, 1943, the storage

capacity was increased by 2.20 feet, to gage height 17.2 feet, by
adding flashboards in the spillway, as approved by the State Engineer.

The unl ined earth channel below the spi 11 way crest has been
severely eroded by past spillway flows.
