,I
I, I

,

I

Dependability of quality

I

Obtaining better quality water for domestic and stock purposes is

the principal interest of those Morgan County residents looking for new

supplies. For most of those within the proposed water district, quantity

of supply has not been a problem.

I

The quality of water is normally expressed in terms of bacteriological,

physical, chemical and radioactivity characteristics, The bacteriological

quality of ground water in the aquiferp under study is not given considera-

tion herein. With proper well construction and chlorination, the bacteriolo-

gical quality poses little problem. Likewise, offensive physical charac-

teristics are not expected such as color, odor or turbidity. No measure-

ments of radioactivity have been made, but no experience of excessive

radioactivity in the area is known.

I

I
I

I

The chemical quality of the ground water is of interest, however.
The chemical constituents found in ground water are the result of the
dissolution of materials within the aquifer, plus addition of chemicals
by man through farming or other activities. The U. S. Public Health Service
and the Colorado Department of Health have established chemical standards
for drinking water. Recommended maximum limits of particular chemical con-
stituents set forth by the Colorado Department of Health for public water
suppies are as follows:

I

I

I

Substance

Concentration
in mg/l*

I

I

Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate (ABS)
Arsenic (As)- -
Chloride (Cl) - - - -
Copper (Cu) - - - - -
Carbon Chloroform Extract (CCE)
Cyanide (CN)- - - - - - -
Iron (Fe) - - - -
Magnesium - - - - -
}mnganese (Mn)- - - - -
Nitrate (N03)-
Phenols - - - - - - -
Sulphate (S04)- - - - - -
Total Dissolved Solids-
Zinc (Zn) - - - - - - -

0.5
0.01
250
1.0
0.2
0.01
0.3
125
0.05
45
0.001
250
500
5

I

I
I
I
I

*Milligrams per liter equals parts per million, as used elsewhere in this
report.

- 4 -

M.
