I

I

CHAPTER VI
PROJECT EVALUATION

I

Present water costs

I

The present cost of domestic water for rural Morgan County residents

is highly variable. Those who are fortunate enough to have reasonably good

quality ground water available to them are now experiencing a relatively

low cost of water. However, most of those proposed to be served are now

using water of poor quality. The water requires softening for household

and dairy washing uses. Incrustation and corrosion requires frequent re-

placement of wells, pumps, pipes, fittings and fixtures.

In order to determine the present cost of water, ten members of the

Morgan County Quality Water Association Board of Directors were polled.

A summary of this poll is presented in Table 8.

I

I

I

I

I

Table 8. Estimated Cost of Present Water Supplies

I

Well and pump depreciation $278/year
Power costs 9l/year
Water softening costs 229/year
Plumbing replacement 237/year
Total cost $835/year
Estimated average monthly cost - $69.60

I

I

I

The above cost estimate does not include the cost of hauling water

as many are now doing, nor does it account for any advers~ health effects

on humans and animals. On the other hand, the members of the Association

Board of Directors probably have poorer quality water and are larger water

users than the average rural Morgan County resident. In addition, if

existing wells are continued to be used for lawn and garden irrigation,

the well, pump, and power costs will continue even though the new water is

delivered to the property. Based on these data and considerations, it is

estimated that if the new water supply costs no more than an average of

$35 per month per tap, the total water cost for the combination of supplies

will not exceed the present cost of water.

I

I

I

I

I

I

-18-

M.
