I

I

Wat~r Quality

I

I

Chemical analyses of two samples of ground water from the Hay Gulch

alluvium have been made by the Colorado Department of Health. The results

of these analyses are compared in Table 4 with recommended and mandatory

limits set forth by the r~partment for public water supplies. Sample No.

157 was obtained from an existing stock well. The analjsis showed all char-

acteristics and constituents to be within the limits with the exception of

manganese (recommended limit = 0.05 mg/l, measured amount = 0.1 mg/l).l/

I

I

Sample No. 216 was obtained fror. a newly drilled irrigation well with

an uncoated steel casing. The well had not been pumped for some time, and

had no pump installed at the time of sampling. Therefore, the sample was

dipped from the well and was water which had been standing in the casing

as opposed to fresh water drawn from the aquifer. Both the high turbidity

and the high iron content indicate that this sample contained rust flakes

from the casing.

I

I

I

I

The Hay Gulch alluvium has superior water quality compared to any other

supplies in or near Morgan County. As shown in the water-supply study

enclosed in Appendix A, both the Camp Creek and the Lost Creek alluviums

have areas of poor-quality water located immediately up-gradient from the

areas where water supplies might be obtained. Neither the Camp Creek or the

Lost Creek alluvium can provide an assured acceptable quality for the long

term compared to Hay Gulch.

I

I

I

I

I

I

I

lIThe proposed drinking water standards to be promulgated and put into effect
in 1976 by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency have a recommended
limit for turbidity of one unit, which was exceeded by Sample No. 157
probably due to the well construction.

I

I

- 10 -

M.
