VI-6

.

WATER QUALITY

Minimum water quality design criteria must be in accordance with State of

Colorado requirements for bacteriological, physical, and chemical standards,

and must provide aesthetica ly acceptable potable water. Design criteria

for allowable bacterial den .ities is th~t essentially no live pathogenic

bacteria or vi ruses can be Jresent in the finished water.

limiting chemical concentrations are given in Table VI-F on the following

page. The hardness 1 imit S'lown does not actually account for the encrusting

and scaling nature of waters generally found with hardness greater than

250 ppm. Soft water would contain less than 50 ppm hardness, normally

acceptable 1 imits f"r water hardness would range between 200 and 250 ppm.

.

FIRE P ROT: CT I ON
A water supply system has a great influence on fire protection and fire
insurance rates within its service area. Therefore, in any study of exist-
ing or proposed water systems, fire protection must be given a high priority.
Cri teria for rating of fi re protection systems are set forth in the publ ica-
tion, "Grading Schedule for Municipal Fire Protection," published by the
Insurance Services Office. A fire protection system is given deficiency
points where that system falls short of set standards; a breakdown or maxi-
mum deficiency points for individual system components is shown in Tlble VI-G

TABLE VI-G
OEFICIENCY POINTS FOR INSURANCE RATING

Featu re Pe rcen t Points
Water Supply 39 1,950
Fi re Depa rtmen t 39 1,950
Fi re Service Communications 9 450
Fi re Silfety Control --.!..l.... 650
TOTAL 100 5,000

.
