V-5

.

supervisor of the Town1s water system, and Dean Smith, who has been in

charge of the water system in the past. The locations of valves and

pipelines have not been verified. Accurate as-built drawings are now

being made. The majority of the system is approximately forty years old,

and according to Mr. Natal, the cast-iron pipelines are in good condition,

but some of the steel and galvanized lines may be deteriorated.

System leakage is about double the allow.lble rate. A discussion of leak-
age rate is included in Section VI.

Carbondale line sizes, in general, are too small to provide dependable

service to the northeast side of Town and to meet normal standards for

fire protection flows. Fire hydrant tests were carried out to help deter-

mine the condi ion of the distribution system as well as fi re flows avai 1-

able to variou, sections of Town (resid,'ntial, commercial, etc.).

.

Fi re flow requi rements are discussed in Section VI, and actual tested
hydrant flows are noted in Table V-A.

TABLE V-A
FIRE HYDRANT TEST FLOWS AND PRESSURES

Static
Pressure Flow
Hydrant Location PSI GPM
Second & Main 65 412
Third & Main 65 580
Fourth & Colorado 65 580
Eighth & Merri I 70 300
Highway 133 & Colorado 67 130
Second & Snowmass Drive 55 480
Capital Ave. & Maroon Drive 57 340
Eighth & Garfield 62 410

.
