1 - GENERAL INFORMATION

1.1 LOCATION

I

The Town of Swink, Colorado is located in Otero County, approximately 5 miles
northwest of La Junta, Colorado. Swink is located in Section 25, Township 23
South, Range 56 West of the Sixth Principal Meridian and has an average eleva-
tion of 4,118 feet above sea level. The Town is served by U.S. Highway 50.
Rail service is provided by the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad.
The present Town limits encompass approximately 180 acres which includes
approximately 28.6 acres of railroad rights-of-way, approximately 16.1 acres
of highway rights-of-way, 14.7 acres of school property, and approximately
5.6 acres of Otero County property. The remaining area is subdivided for
residential and commercial land use, streets, alleys, etc., with the predominate
land use being single family residential dwelling units.

1.2 CLIMATE

I

The climate of Swink is typical of the semi-arid plains with characteristic
features of light rainfall, abundant sunshine, low relative humidity, a large
daily range in temperature, and moderate to high wind velocities. Two weather,
recording stations are located relatively close to Swink. The Rocky Ford 2
SE,. station is located approximately 4.1 miles west-northwest of town and
the La Junta FAA Airport station is located approximately 6.6 miles east-
northeast of town. The weather records for these two stations can be con-
sidered indicative of the temperature and precipitation data for Swink.
The average monthly temperatures, average monthly precipitation, average
annual temperature and precipitation, maximum and minimum temperatures of
record, and average length of frost-free period for the Rocky Ford 2 SE
station is summarized in Table 1.
