The
Company diverts water from the south Platte River, at a headgate
located about 3 miles west of the Town of Orchard.

Project Service Area

The service area is located in Morgan County, approximately 10
miles west of Fort Morgan. Although WVDC water is not tied to
specific irrigated lands, the service area is generally located
on the north side of the South platte River, between the headgate
and the Narrows Bridge. The elevation is 4,400 feet. See map on
page 2.

Need for the Project

The WVDC is undertaking this project to ensure that it can
continue to divert water from the South Platte River. A concrete
diversion dam was built in 1910 and washed out in 1972. It was
replaced by a "temporary" dam, consisting of a single line of
steel sheet piling. That temporary structure has been weakened
by corrosion and subsequent floods, and is in need of
replacement. If the temporary structure washes out, the WVDC
will be unable to divert water to its shareholders.
