.

CHAPTER III

INITIAL DEVELOPI~NT

As in the comprehensive plan, Juniper Reservoir on the Yampa River
would be the key feature for both irrigation and power developments
under the initial stage. Releases for irrigation would be made through
the Deadman Bench Canal about 160 feet above streambed and power water
releases would flow through the powerplant at the base of the dam.

The principal features of the initial development would be the
Juniper Dam, Reservoir, and powerplant; the Deadman Bench Canal and its
branch Sunbeam Canal; and basic public use recreational facilities at
Juniper Reservoir. The Deadman Bench Canal would serve lands along the
south side of Yampa River east of Cross Mountain and the Sunbeam Canal
would cross the Yampa River by siphon to serve lands along the north
side of the river.

.

Deadman Bench Canal would be located near foothills at right of road.
Juniper Mountain is in background.

With the exception of Deadman Bench Canal, the principal facilities
in the initial development would all be the same as described in Chapter
II for the comprehensive plan. In the initial stage Deadman Bench Canal
would be only about 36 miles long with an initial capacity of 260 second-
feet. Laterals and drains would be provided as needed to serve the irri-
gable lands.

As in the comprehensive plan, a mlnlmum continuous base flow of
about 200 second-feet would be released through the power plant to Yampa

.

60
