.

CHAPl'ER II

COMPREHENSIVE PLAN

Artesia Reservoir would have a total storage capacity of 29,000 acre-feet
at normal water surface elevation of 5,871 feet. The reservoir would have
an active capacity of 21.000 acre-feet and an inactive capacity of 8,000
acre-feet. At normal water surface elevation the reservoir would have a
surface area of about 840 acres. At the inactive storage pool elevation
of 5,836 feet the water surface area would cover about 350 acres. Artesia
Dam would be a rolled earth-fill structure. It would have a maximum height
of 100 feet and would be about 6,150 feet in length at the crest including
long dike extensions at both ends of the dam. The outlet works, with a
capacity of 370 second.feet and a total length of about 4,400 feet, would
extend through the west side of the reservoir. Spillway works would not
be required as the reservoir has essentially no tributary drainage area.
Lands in the reservoir basin include about 800 acres in private ownership.
Improvements in the basin include several buildings, about a mile of Colo-
rado State Highway 67, and a short length of R.E.A. power line.

Deadman Bench Canal

.

Deadman Bench Canal would extend about 154 miles southwest from Juni-
per Dam. It would have an initial capacity of about 2,050 second-feet and
a terminal capacity of 235 second-feet. The canal would include about 133
miles of earth section, 10 miles of tunnels, 7 miles of bench flumes, 3
miles of lined canal sections, and 1 mile of siphons. Through much of its
length, the open canal would traverse rough sidehill terrain.

Looking north at divide between Yampa and White Rivers and at
Cross Mountain in background which would require tunnels
for Deadman Bench Canal. Area shown is just west of Elk
Springs, Colo.

.

21
