.

SUMMARY SHEETS

Juniper project

LOCATION: The lower or western parts of the Yampa and White River drain-
age areas in Moffat and Rio Blanco Counties of northwestern
Colorado and Uintah County of northeastern Utah,

~

.

The comprehensive plan for the Juniper project includes'development
in both Colorado and Utah, It provides for full service irrigation
of 100,000 acres in the two States, hydroelectric power production,_...
recreational development;, and fish and wildlife enhancement, Water
would be s~pplied primarily 'by' diversions from the Yampa River, Small
additional supplies also would be provided from return flows from
project lands and di~ect flow diversions from the White River, Regu-
lation of Yampa River flows would be provided at Juniper Reservoir
on the river, Power water releases would pass through a powerplant
at the base of Juiper Dam and irrigation"releases would be made to
the Deadman Bench Canal which would head at the dam about 160 feet
above streambed and eXtend southwest 154 miles, Water for immediate
irrigation needs would be distributed from Deadman Bench Canal through
laterals and direct turnouts to project lands and through two branch
canals--the Sunbeam and Pinyon Canals, Water in Deadman Bench Canal
in excess of immediate irrigation needs would be stored in the poten-
tial Artesia Reservoir at an offstream site and then distributed as
needed by the Artesia Canal diverting at the reservoir outlet, In
the lower part of the project area, the Wonsits Canal would intercept
and distribute return flow and the Savannah Butte Canal would distrib-
ute water from the White River, Basic recreational facilities would
be provided at Juniper and Artesia Reservoirs, and both reservoirs
would enhance fishery values, Minimum water releases would be made
continuously through Juniper powerplant to enhance the stream fishery
along Yampa River, The Juniper powerplant would be interconnected
with !lJ1d become an integrated part of the Colorado River Storage proj-
ect power system.

.

An initial stage of the comprehensive development could readily be
undertaken in Colorado only. This initial development would provide
for irrigation, power. fish and wildlife, and recreation with irri-
gation limited to about 9,000 acres, The only features of the ini-
tial development would be Juniper Reservoir and Powerplant, the Dead-
man Bench Canal and its branch Sunbeam Canal, and basic recreational
facilities at Juniper Reservoir. In the initial development only the
initial 36 miles of the Deadman Bench Canal would be constructed, As
in the comprehensive plan, minimum base flows would be provided for
fish in the Yampa River below the Juniper powerplant. Juniper Reser-
voir would enhance both fishery and recreational values.
