<br />natural drainages, waterways, fence rows and roadsides, and 4) urban, <br />residential and commercial areas which have replaced former cropland. <br /> <br />Based on the District's 1996 Crop Production Report, irrigated croplands and <br />pasture comprise about 60% of the lands within the District. The most <br />commonly used method of irrigation is surface irrigation using furrows. Economy, <br /> <br />In 1995, the crops produced on the Orchard Mesa Irrigation District lands <br />provided a gross income of about $12.69 million to area farmers, for a gross <br />return of approximately $3318 ptlr acre of farm land. <br /> <br />Although other activities, notably, energy development and manufacturing, <br />contribute to the local economy, agricultural use is normally the most stable <br />and consistent year after year. Many small businesses, particularly in the east <br />portion of the Grand Valley, depend on District farmers for support, <br /> <br />c. <br /> <br />PROJECT RIGHTS-OF-WAY <br /> <br />The Mutual Mesa Lateral traverses primarily private land. Although there are <br />some instances in which OMID obtained deeded easements for portions of its <br />canals early in its existence, OMID generally does not have deeded easements for <br />the majority of its canals, Extensive research of the Mesa County Clerk and <br />Recorder's records reveals no deeds granting OMID or its predecessors easements <br />across the land traversed by the Mutual Mesa Lateral.
