<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />A. <br /> <br />CHAPTER II <br /> <br />DESCRIPTION OF SPONSORING ENTITY <br /> <br />BACKGROUND INFORMATION <br /> <br />L General. <br /> <br />The Orchard Mesa Irrigation District is a division of the Grand Valley <br />Project, which is located near Grand Junction, Colorado, in Mesa County, <br />within the Upper Colorado River Basin (see Figure I-A), The Grand <br />Valley Project was constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation to provide <br />irrigation water to approximately 38,000 acres of diversified farmland <br />adjoining the Colorado River both above and below its confluence with the <br />Gunnison River. <br /> <br />The irrigation facilities on the OMID were constructed with a Federal loan; <br />they are owned and operated by the District. The District and the Bureau <br />of Reclamation have entered into a series of agreement over the years <br />which established repayment SChedules for the initial construction and <br />several major improvement projects, <br /> <br />2. Area Served by OMID, <br /> <br />The District boundaries encomj)ass 10,027 acres. Of this area, irrigation <br />water is supplied to approximately 9,200 acres through 40 miles of canals, <br />There are approximately 4,000 water users that own the acreage that is <br />irrigated in the District. <br /> <br />The District lies south of the Colorado River, starting south and east of the <br />Town of Palisade and extending west to the confluence of the Gunnison and <br />Colorado Rivers, The OMID service area includes the areas known as the <br />Vinelands, East Orchard Mesa and Orchard Mesa; portions of the west end <br />of Orchard Mesa are adjacent to and in the City of Grand Junction, Mesa <br />County, Colorado, All lands within the service area are located within T.I <br />S, R,l W., R.I E., and R.2 E, Ute PM. A service area map is attached <br />(Fig. II-A), The area of the j)roposed MML project is indicated on this <br />map. <br /> <br />II-I <br />
