Hartmann, SHPO
President, Colorado Historical Society
1300 Broadway
Denver, Colorado 80203

Dear Mr, Hartmann:

The US Army Corps of Engineers, Intermountain Planning Office, Salt Lake City, Utah
and the city of Ouray are studying the need to replace Skyrocket Creek's Diversion Structure
because it has deteriorated. In accordance with 36 CFR 800, the Army Corps of Engineers has
contracted with Alpine Archaeological Consultants Incorporated to conduct a cultural resource
inventory of the Skyrocket Creek Diversion Structure in Ouray County, Colorado. The enclosed
report documents the inventory and the resulting determinations that the structure is not eligible
for the National Register of Historic Places. Jonathon C. Horn, Principal Investigator for Alpine,
has concluded that the structure is not eligible for the National Register because the structure
does not have any engineering merit and lacks integrity. Therefore, we have determined that the
rem9val of the diversion structure will have no effect on historic properties.

We request that you concur with our determination within 30 days. If you have any
questions regarding this matter, please contact Jerry Fuentes at (916) 557-6706.

Sincerely,

Walter Yep
Chief, Planning Division

Enclosure

I concur

Date

ri'i~
RECEIVED

SEP 2 5 1998

CHSlOAHP
