Feasibility Report for Improvement of Paonia's Water Supply System
Town of Paonia
April 21, 2000

5. WATER SUPPLY FIRM YIELD

5.1 Existing Raw Water System

The Town's water supply system includes a complex network of natural springs, raw and treated
water transmission lines, treatment plants, treated water storage, reservoir storage, and a metered
distribution system, Figure 5.1 shows the location of the springs and pipelines that supply
Paonia with its raw water. Figure 5.2 is a schematic of the water supply system that illustrates
the relationship of water rights and transmission and storage features,' ,t-
...

'I

,., " ,'~".,;:.
The Town's water system is divided into two separate systems, whicff:':-~ssentially opera~';l
independently from each other, The lower system serves most of the r,~sideriK~~6,r:~side wit,hin
the Town limits and the upper system serves most of the private pipeline coIiiPanie$;' custorhers
living outside the Town, and the newer subdivisions loc<t!ed.at higher elev~ti9.H~:;}Yithin the
Town, Each system has its own treatment plant, treated~ater storage, transfuission and
distribution system, and water supply springs, There is a 2~mch-cliameter pipeline that can be
used to feed water from the upper system to the lower system, During emergencies, the lower
system can also be used to supply water to the upper system, but~t reduced service pressures,

Water for the upper system comes from the LakeFork Springs and the three German Creek
Springs (See Figures 5.1 and 5.2). Raw water transmission pipelint;:s in the upper system include
. , -., ~
the Beaver Dam Ditch Pipeline and the German Spring~ PipeIme, Water treated at the upper
treatment plant can be either stored in~2-millioIi-gallon (MG), welded-steel storage tank, where
it is delivered on demand to the upper:systemdistributionsystem, or delivered to private pipeline
companies through the Stewart Mesa or Dry Gulch Pipeline, Filter backwash water and excess
treated water that cannot b~ delivered to storag~ pr other pipelines is spilled to Dry Gulch at the
upper trealIi1ent plant. l'htl total direct flowv.:ater right of the upper system springs is 4,5 cfs,
\fi8~~:~'- }/;~:,' ';{i;}(:': ~>~. 7 .0'; .
Water sourtes fort4e lower system 4lclude the Reynolds Creek, Mays, Gelwick, Bell Creek, and
~, .- _....
