I
I
I

THE COMMUNITY

I
I
I

The Winter Park Water and Sanitation District was formed in June 1966,
to provide water and sewer facilities to the Winter Park community.
The District immediately sold bonds and constructed a sewage collection
system and waste treatment facilities. A water system was designed in
1966 to serve the needs of the community at that time. However,
Farmers Home Administration funding assistance was not available and
the project was abandoned. Since that time, additional land within the
District has been proposed for development and a new water system plan
for the area is necessary.

I

No public water supply system now exists within the District. Residences

and businesses individually have water supplies from wells, springs,

creeks or the Denver Water Board raw water collection system. The ski

area and the High Country Inn both have domestic service and fire pro-

tection from taps in the Denver Water Board siphon. The ski area filters

and chlorinates the water used in their domestic system, but has no

storage and cannot properly supply peak demands.

I
I

I

I

Community leaders have combined efforts with similar nearby interests
to promote the Winter Park Ski Area as an attraction for ski vacation
guests. The efforts of the Winter Park Information Bureau have increased
so that now the Winter Park Ski Area is being advertised nationwide.
Community efforts are also being directed toward promotion of four-
season use of the facilities in the area.

I

I

I

The importance of a safe, reI iable and adequate water system for the
healthy existence and orderly growth of the community cannot be overly
stressed. The District Board and other citizens recognize the need
of providing a community water system. In a community such as Winter
Park, with the health of several hundred thousand people who visit the
area each year relying on the quality of water available, the urgency
of the realization of this proposed water system is manifestly increased.

I

I
I
I

1-4

I
