Turbidity levels have been

measured in excess of 50 milligrams per liter.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed

the National Secondary Drinking Water regulations. These criteria deal

primarily with aesthetics and water suitability, rather than health

aspects. The maximum contaminant levels established are recommendations.

but not requirements, however, the State may adopt these regulations as

mandatory. The proposed secondary MCL's are given below. The State of

Colorado has not yet proposed secondary standards, although it is anti-

cipated that when adopted, they will closely resemble the federal regu-

lations as listed below.

PROPOSED U.S. E.P.A.

SECONDARY MAXIMUM CONTAMINATE LEVELS

Contami na nt

Level

Chloride
Color
Copper
Corrosivity
Foaming Agents
Hydrogen Sulfide
Iron
Manganese
Odor
pH
TDS
Sulfate
Zinc

250 mg/l
15 C.u.
1 mg/l
non-corrosive
0.5 mg/l
0.05 mg/l
0.3 mg/l
0.05 mg/l
3 T.O.N.
6.5 to 8.5
500 mg/l
250 mg/l
5 mg/l

Note: mg/l: mill i grams per 1 iter
T.O.N.: Threshold Odor Number
cu: Color Units
TDS: Total Dissolved Solids

IV-4
