BUFJ::AU OF EIm;;S

Coal

The Dwcota formation exposea, at the surface may contain subbituminous
coals in the reservoir site, althouc:h none was observed. "'here outcrops
were seen elsewhere, the coals are too thin and too local to be mined.

Oil and Gas

Three wells have been drilled in the vicinity of this reservoir site,
and one well--the Do. 1 Hedley Scott--is virtually adjacent to it (fig.
5). The Petroleum Information well cards on this test do not record an:\'
gas or oil shows; the ;rell is considered "dr:r and abandoned."

The area currently is under lease to Continental Oil Co. One lease,
;rhich expires in 1963, requires $1.00 per acre per year rentals. Current
requirements for new leases are $5.00 benus per acre and $1.00 per acre
per year rental.

A tabulation fol1mrs of wells in the vicinity of the !-1onument Creek
Reservoir site:

Location
!~I SW DE sec. 14,
T. 39 rl., R.19 ,I.

Hell
No.1
Spargo
Unit Gov't.
No.1 \1ebb

TD.ft.
6,243

CeJ:1ll1ents
Dry and abandoned,

Operator
Carter
Oil Co.

6,262

C SH SW sec. 29,
T.40 N., R. 19 w.

Dry end abandoned.
Paradox salt at
6,247 ft.
Dry and abandoned.
Paradox salt at
6,090 ft.

Continental
Oil Co.

C SE SE sec. 34,
T. 41 N., R.19 ~{.

Continental
Oil Co.

6,1l9

no. 1
Medley
Scott

Although the lredley Scott No. 1 dry hole does not entirely disprove
the oil or gas potential under the reservoir site, the presence of a dry
hole this close should haye bearing in arriving at a valuation for this
potential.

CONCLUSIONS

The sodium chloride, uranium, and subbituminous coal potential of
this area is so poor that no value should be attached to it in arriving
at an acquisition price for these lands.

The possibility of finding uranium ore in the Shinarump, Chinle, or
Harrison formations is remote, but should not be >rritten off entirely.
The presence of a reservoir probably would not prevent extracting ore

114

,I
!
