Louer portions of the dam will be
in a fairly narrow, steep-walled canyon cut into more resistant sandstones
and interbedded shales of the Dakota for~ation. Above this sandstone, the
ridge to the nort.h is fairly flat and timber-covered, whereas the ridge
to the south is Gently risinc farmland.

Several low sendstone rims are in the proposed reservoir area. This
land, is covered uith sagebrush and is being used as ranre. Other areas
covered 'dth pinon pine and juniper may have a thin soil cover that could
be farmed if the timber uere removed. The rest of the reservoir site is
gently rolling and is being farmed (figs. 3 and 4).

OI'lNERSHIP

, I
I
I
I

A check of plat books of the Bureau of Land Management has indicated
that there e,re no patented mining claims in the vicinity of this reservoir
site. Records at the Dolores County courthouse indicate that all lands in
T. 41 N., R. 19 W., and sec. 1-12, T. 40 N., R. 19 W., are privately o'ffied.

;;.';.

The Federal government may have retained mineral riGhts when patents
were issued on lands in the dam and reservoir area, but this item would
have to be checked by a study of the individual titles involved.

The county assessor and George N. Herron, Jr., who oyms land within
the project area, stated that to the best of their knowledge no mining
claims had been located in the vicinity. As a further check, wooded parts
of the project area were examined, but no sign of claim corners, discovery
pits, or bulldozer trenching was noted.

DESCRIPTION OF DAH AIm RESERVOIR

Jlonument Creek Reservoir is one of a series of reservoirs planned to
develop waters from the Dolores River of southwestern Colorado. Hater to
be impounded will be brought by canal from the McPhee Reservoir on the
Dolores River. The main function of 110nument Creek Reservoir ~ill be to
store municipal and industrial 1'Tater for the town of Dove Creek, and to
provide terminal storage of irrigation water for project lands to the
southwest. It also will allow the proposed Dove Creek Canal to be formed
with a smaller cross section.

..: .,~ .' ~'"

,As planned, Jbnument Creek Dam "ill be an earth fill structure 1dth an
approximate crest lenrth of 5,000 feet and a crest elevation of 6,735 feet
above sea level. Its height will be ~bout 107 feet. The reservoir capac-
ity is estimated to be 5,040 acre-feet (fig. 5).

GEOLOGY

The Dakota is the only formation exposed in the reservoir area.
