BUREAU OF MINES

The Dove Creek field has been developed in T. 38 11.. R. 19 \1.. about
8 miles southwest of the reservoir area. This field produces gas and
condensate from the Paradox formation of Pennsylvanian age at depths of
5.900 to 6,000 feet. The field was discovered late in 1948. Oil and gas
produced to the end of 1960 totaled 60.518 barrels of oil and 506.991.000
cubic feet of gas,

As is indicated on figure 5. the re~iona1 structural contours do not
indicate the presence of the oilfield in sees. 3 and 4. T. 38 N., R. 19~1.
Consequently the lack of structural closure in the Cahone area does not
preclude the possibility of an oil or gas field under the reservoir.
This possibility should be considered when arriving at a land acquisition
value.

It is suggested that title to oil and gas rights be left with the
present o,mers. all01nng them to lease as they see fit but specifying
that any test under the reservoir area will have to be accomplished by
directional drilling or other approved method. There is no reason to
believe that the reservoir would seriously hamper future oil or gas
production or that such production necessarily would limit the usefulness
of the reservoir. The actual dam site should be purchased with mineral
rights.

-",,,-
'A

CONCLUSIONS

No value should be attached to the sodium chloride, uranium, or coal
potential of the reservoir area in determining a fair price for the lands
required. An oil field may exist beneath the reservoir site, but its
development should not be hampered if the project is completed.

If uranium is found in the Chinle and Shinarump formations belm,
the reservoir, mining should be possible with no difficulty. If ore is
ever found in the Salt ~Iash member of the Morrison formation, baCkfilling
of abandoned workings should be required.

'"-..
