This town in Western
Routt County has been a subject of severe population impact due to energy demands
in the form of coal. The population explosion in three years from 760 to approx-
imately 1,900 has caused the existing facilities, some of which date to 1913, to
become almost totally obsolete.
This report examines the demographic and other features of Hayden and its

surrounding area, population projections, projections of expansion required for

the water facilities, repayment capabilities and the necessary features required

to provide good water service for the Town up to the year 1996.

Chapter 1 -- General Information

The Town of Hayden, located in Western Routt County, lies approximately 17
miles East of the Town of Craig and apprOximately 25 miles West of the Town of
Steamboat Springs which is the County Seat. Hayden is served by U. S. Highway
40 which runs through the center of Town. It is also served by the Denver and
Rio Grande Railroad for freight service and by the Continental Trailways Bus
System as a flag-stop for three busses daily each way between"Denver and Salt
Lake City. The Town lies at an elevatioO of 6,380 feet in the approximate center
of a broad, level irrigated plain which is well known for hay and livestock pro-
duction. Much of the surrounding area 00 elevated mesas that slope to the North
and South toward the hills are famous for their production of dry land wheat and

other gra i ns.
The following Tables show in summary such data as precipitation, snowfall,

and evaporation.

-l~
