I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

.. Chapter 1
.. GENERAL INFORMATION

GENERAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Trinidad Water Supply Improvement Project proposes an
expansion of the City's water treatment plant and improvement
of the raw water transmission line. The project will be
in two phases, with Phase I including the water treatment
plant expansion and upgrading of the valve controls on the
existing North Lake raw water transmission line, and
renovation of the intake structure on North Lake. Phase II
would include installation of a new raw water transmission
line from the North Lake Intake Aqueduct to Lake Monument.
Development of Phase II will depend somewhat upon the
outcome of a current request before the State Water Court
to allow alternate points of diversion for the City's
municipal water supply.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the proposed project are to upgrade and
increase the City of Trinidad's municipal water supply
system, to provide for current and future water supply
requirements, to enhance the utilization of existing water
rights, and to provide a greater degree of safety in
meeting peak demands during prolonged drought periods.
Currently, the water filtration plant capacity and the raw
water transmission line capacity from the City's storage
reservoirs (North Lake and Monument Lake) to the water
treatment plant need upgrading to meet the above mentioned
objectives.

LOCATION

The project facilities are located in what is known as the
City of Trinidad's Mountain Water Supply System area
30 miles west of Trinidad. Both the city of Trinidad and
the project area are located in Las Animas County.

Figure I shows the project location. The Mountain Water
Supply System consists of North Lake, Monument Lake,
Trinidad Water Filtration Plant, the North Lake Pipeline,
the Monument Lake Pipeline and the auxiliary diversion
structures, ditches, and aqueducts from adjacent streams
which fill Monument Lake and North Lake. A treated-water
gravity pipeline flows from the water treatment plant to
the City of Trinidad. A number of individual houses,
farms and small communities between the water treatment
plant and the City are served by the system.

1
