Record- <br />ing meters are required for permanent records of water withdrawal from the <br />aquifer. Prior to pumping the water into the potable delivery system, it <br />must be chlorinated. <br />Preliminary Design of Reverse Osmosis System for Treating Existing <br />Water Supply <br />In the design of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system, the capacity of the <br />system to be used is very important ~s the construction and operation and <br />maintenance costs are directly related to the size of the system. Therefore, <br />treated water (product water from RO system) storage is required due to fluc- <br />tuation in the demand for water on an hourly, daily, etc. basis. The amount <br />of storage required is a function of the capacity of the RO syst~m used. <br />Two alternate systems were investigated in the study: (1) an 8J,000 <br />gpd system (maximum monthly flow for existing demand rates and aJproximately <br />average daily demand in the year 2000) with a required 100,000 gallon under- <br />ground storage tank; (2) a 150,000 gpd system with a required 30,000 <br />gallons underground storage tank. Either system will reduce the nitrates <br />to less than 45 mg/l based on a raw water nitrate concentrations of about <br />100 mg/l. Actually the RO product water contains less than 14 mg/l N03~ but <br />it is blended with raw water at a ratio of approximately 65% RO to 35% <br />raw water to keep the size of the RO system as small as possible. The <br />finished quality of the blended treated water would contain approximately <br />200 mg/l dissolved solids as compared with the actual raw water dissolved <br />solids concentration of 450 mg/l. This reduction in dissolved solids would <br />be a bonus in addition to the removing of the nitrate which is the main <br />purpose of the RO treatment system. <br /> <br />34 <br />
