The canal
llould. then follo\r the route of the existinc ditch for 1.8 miles but
1Tould be constructed on nell aliglllllent over the remainder of its
length. Earth lining has been included in the cost estimate for
about a third of the canal length. All of the siphons and drop struc-
tures would. be of precast concrete pipe. Data on the structures are
shown below.

Type of Length Diameter Capacity
structure ( feet) ( inches) (second-feet )
Siphon 530 72 300
Siphon 820 72 300
Siphon 3,600 48 100
Siphon 500 42 75
Drop 1,450 24 30
Drop 100 24 30

The first 0.7 mile of the canal would be constructed in soils
derived from Mancos shale and the remainder would be in Dakota sandstone
and overlying so Hs. Suitable earth-lining materials are available
along the canal route. Nearly all of the route would be across open ter-
rain with gentle cross slope and light covering of brush and scattered
juniper trees.

Major turnouts would be constructed to Cattlemens ditch, to a
draw leading to Gould ReserVOir, and to Castle Canyon. Numerous addi-
tional turnouts would be provided to release water for distribution to
Upper Iron Creek and Upper Fruitland Mesa lands. A new bridge 'Would be
required at the Colorado State Highway 92 crossing. Other minor struc-
tures would be provided at drainage crossings.

22
