SHORT mLE:

Kiowa core - hole project

C. PROPOSAL AUTHOR(S)

S.G, Robson

D. INTRODUCTION:

The Denver Museum of Natural History in cooperatioll with the National Scienc(, Foundation. :olorado Water
Conservation Board. Colorado Division ofWaler Resources. and other agencies :plans to drill a 2,000 ft. deep
core hole at Kiowa, Co. The core hole will penetrate the Teniary and Cretaceou,: formations (Jat contain the
Denver Basin aquifers including the lower Dawson Arkose; Denver. Arapahoe, f,nd Lar:unie Formations; and
the Fox Hills Sandstone. The study of the Kiowa core will provide a detailed des,:ription of the sediments near
the center of the Denver Basin, and will entail lithologic, geohydrologic, palynological, magm'tostratigraphic,
geochemical, fission track, and borehole geophysical analyses of the core or cor~ hole. The U,GS. WRD has
the responsibility for coordinating the geohydrologic analyses of the core. The Denver Museu m of Natural
History, and various universities and organizations have responsibility for conducting other asI'ects of the core
analyses. It is planned that the core hole will be converted to a water well at the completion or coring.

E. LOCATION:

The core hole which will penetnlte the lower Dawson aquifer, Denver aquifer, A~apahoe aquif~, and the
Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer of the Denver Basin will be drilled in February] 999 Elt the Elbert County
Fairgrounds, in Kiowa, Co. Kiowa is located about 50 miles southeast of Denver near the geographic center of
the Denver Basin.

Appendix A
