According to t01mspeople l;ho have lived in Pico quite some time,

the period of turbidity during spring runoff could last a maximum of

6 weeks, and there are 8 weeks maxirolllll during the SUlJU1ler in ..moh
Silver Creek could stay turbid due to afternoon rains. 'Ibis makes a
ma:dmuIIl period of 14 weeks of treatlllent for turbidity that should be
expected .
The proposed treatment facility has a chemical feeder that treats
the water w.i th a coagulant before filtration. The coagulant is fed
automatically at a prescribed dosage. The water should also be treated
wi th a small amolU1t of neutralizing agent to reduce the acidity of the
water~ The acidity in the l;ater could corrode the lines and shorten'
their lives.
The .later quality tests sho.., this water to be completely acceptable
for industrial use without treatment. Therefore, the industrial water
will be taken out of its present facility and used from an entirely
different intake than the conunercial and residential water.

The supply outlet in the 222,350 gallon capacity intake pond is
designed to draw the water at a depth of ten to twelve feet on the lower
edge of the pond allowing maximum retention time for settling solids
and leav.ing one and one-half feet of the bottom for sludge accumulation.
Also, the outlet is provided .dth a screen to prevent debris or fish
from entering the system.
,The pond is designed to be easily cleaned. The vertical tl-1elve inch
corrugated metal pipe will be fitted with a collar that can be pulled out.
The pipe 'leighs 10,1 pounds per foot, so the operator must lift 130 pOlU1ds
to rem.ove the pipe to drain the pond. The pipe is placed directly below
the catl-lalk in:~entiona11y to allw the operator to use a come;'along
to jerk the pipe if necessary,

- 27 -
