Alternative Sites The potential sites investigated for a water storage reservoir on Rock Creek are located in a canyon section of the Rock Creek Valley on the western flank of the Gore Range, about 7 miles west of Gore Pass and 27 miles west of the town of Kremmling, Colorado. The sites are within the Routt National Forest about 12 miles upstream from the confluence of Rock Creek with the Colorado River. Exhibit 3-1 shows the location map of the sites investigated and the reservoir of the selected alter- native. Based on examination of previous reports and recent topographic map- ping, four potential damsites were identified on Rock Creek. On 20 August 1985, members of the MKE project staff, including geotech- nical and dam design personnel, together with the River District Project Manager, performed a field reconnaissance of the potential sites. Based on the reconnaissance and preliminary determinations of quantities, two of the sites were selected for further evaluation. o Site A, Upstream Site - The upstream site is located on Rock Creek about 700 feet downstream of the confluence of Horse Creek, as shown on Exhibit 3-1. (This site was identified in the July 1984 Bechtel report.) At this location, the stream- bed is about 200 feet wide. The right abutment slopes uni- formly at about 1.6 horizontal to 1.0 vertical. The left abutment slopes upward from the streambed at about the same slope to the top of a ridge about 130 vertical feet above the stream.
